SVG Returns to In-Person Events with Industry Unifying Esports Production Forum in Los Angeles


How the pandemic changed industry operations was a primary focus

On Tuesday, the Sports Video Group hosted its first in-person event in 616 days. The Esports Production Summit at Sheraton Universal in Los Angeles drew over 200 attendees and brought the esports production community together for a face-to-face meeting for the first time in two years.

The full day of panels, talks and case studies delved into the next-generation workflows deployed by today’s top esports tournament producers, publishers and platforms. The event, which required proof of vaccination and masks in the main ballroom, was led by SVG Esports’ production advisory committee and co-chaired by two pillars of the industry: Responsible for content and programming of the EA group Joseph lynch and ESL Gaming Senior Global Manager, Purchasing / Executive Producer, Special Events, Simon eicher.

“Two years ago when we were together in this room, if you had told us we were going to have to do what we did for the last 18 months, we would have told you you were crazy,” Lynch said. during his welcome address. “But when the whole world stopped we dug and the whole thing [broadcasting] the industry looked to those in this room to determine how we were going to produce. The people in this room understood that because that’s what we do. This is what esport is. Esport is all about figuring things out and getting the job done.

Joe Lynch of EA, who chaired the event, kicked off the SVG Esports Production Summit with his opening comments.

“I have been working in this company for a long time,” he continued. “In 25 years in entertainment, sports and current affairs, I have never seen competitors come together to solve a problem as a group. It was really impressive. This is the raison d’être of this community. This is the very essence of esport. I am very happy to be here and delighted to be here with all of you.

Over the past year and a half, the esports production industry has undergone a historic transformation in the wake of the pandemic. While esports organizations have a long way to go when it comes to cloud and remote production technologies, the pandemic has accelerated technology roadmaps and brought technology to the forefront. Tuesday’s event showcased these pioneering efforts and provided a glimpse of what lies ahead for the industry.

The SVG Esports Production Summit kicked off with a look at the historic production of Riot Games’ 2021 League of Legends World Championship, which recently wrapped up in Iceland. Director of Riot Games, Creative Esports, Carrie Dunn and Executive Producer, Global LoL Esports and Wild Rift Esports Events, Nick Troop explained how their respective teams pulled off the monumental live broadcast in the face of unprecedented challenges, including a last-minute move from China to Iceland.

Then there was a “state of the industry” report on the latest live production technology and workflows from esports broadcast leaders: EA’s Lynch; Matt Arden, Head of Content and Media, NBA 2K League; Matt Donovan, Director of Engineering and Broadcast Technology, Riot Games; Andrew Lane, director, broadcast and production, FACEIT; David Light, Broadcast Engineer, Solutions, Activision Blizzard Esports.

Eicher then remotely provided a behind-the-scenes look at ESL Gaming’s EMEA production center in Katowice, Poland, one of the largest and most sophisticated esports production facilities in Europe.

The ‘Return of LAN Events and Live Venues’ panel offered insight into how the live production industry is facing a ‘new normal’, mixing the remote workflows deployed during the pandemic with traditional on-site production methods. On the panel were TJ Canty Jr., Director, Events and Operations, NBA 2K League; Andrew Lane, director, broadcast and production, FACEIT; Amber Luther, Planner, Senior Partner, Populous; Heather Rosenfeldt, Vice President, Commercial Operations, ESL Gaming America; and Ryan Thompson, Co-Founder / Production Manager, Esports Engine.

The SVG Esports Production Summit featured technology exhibits showcasing cutting edge equipment for esports events.

After an al fresco lunch, the most integral piece of the esports storytelling ecosystem took center stage: the Observer Team. Virtual camera operators in the game, observers are tasked with building a cohesive narrative out of the ballistic and expansive action that takes place in the game. Moderated by Jason Baker, Co-Founder and CEO of Do Not Peek Entertainment and featuring Royce Dickerson, Executive Producer, EA, the panel included Phil Englert, Business Development Manager, Esports, Ross Video; Heather “sapphiRe” Garozzo, observer / VP CS: GO / VALORANT, talent, Dignitas; James Grieve, Battle Royale Observer / Director; and Xavier LaTorre, Senior Observer, Call of Duty League, Blizzard Entertainment.
