CHARJAH: Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) 2021, one of the three most important book fairs in the world, hosted the participation of 1,632 Arab and foreign publishing houses, at Expo Center Sharjah, on the theme âThere is always a good bookâ. Organized by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the book fair, which runs from Wednesday (November 3) to November 13, brings together 85 writers, as well as intellectuals, poets and artists from 22 countries, and features 970 events , including cultural sessions, shows, seminars and workshops. Sharjah Supreme and Sovereign Council Member His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi kicked off the 40th edition of SIBF on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, SBA Chairman Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, in his keynote address, praised the vision of the ruler of Sharjah whose firm belief in the results of the emirate’s cultural project strengthened Sharjah’s stature as a as cultural capital of the Arab world. âHis Highness believed in and envisioned the true impact of culture long before other nations recognized its gentle but tangible power,â Al Ameri said.

âI remember when His Highness said that a nation’s cultural projects are long term and their results cannot be achieved in a year or two. I clearly remember his words when he stressed that the cultural project is not just a celebration of authors and books, but rather a long journey that will one day benefit those who truly believe in it, âhe said. he adds.
He said that today, after 40 years, the SIBF has become the world’s leading book fair this year, as it has registered the highest number of deals made in the buying and selling of rights to editing. Al Ameri added that the strengths and beauty of Arabic literature has transcended geographic and linguistic boundaries thanks to the prestigious Sharjah “Turjuman” Translation Award, introduced in 2011, which aims to promote Arabic titles to the world. He said that the creative works of poets, intellectuals and authors of Sharjah now enjoy an international readership and that to date the award has received 16,490 requests for translation from and into the Arabic language and has contributed to the publication of 1,493 books.
