Welcome To The World Of Scottish Books

What is Publishing Scotland?
Publishing Scotland (PS) is a trade association of almost 80 Scottish publishers. Founded in 1973, we assist our members with the marketing of their books to the widest possible readership within the UK and overseas. On members' behalf, we attend many national and international book fairs and exhibitions, including London Book Fair, Frankfurt Book Fair, Bologna Children's Book Fair, BookExpo, Gothenburg Book Fair, Prague BookWorld, Scotland's International Trade Fair, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. We also co-ordinate bookshop and library promotions, and other marketing initiatives. We have an extensive database which members and non-members may purchase mailing services and labels. Our annual training programme of courses and seminars can be viewed on the TRAINING page. In PS's office we have a display of new books from member publishers. We also have a resource library which is available to PS members and we also implement joint research projects and surveys with organisations such as the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Enterprise.

Publishing Scotland
On April 2nd 2007, the Scottish Publishers Association changed to a new organisation, Publishing Scotland.

Opening up the sector to recognise the formats and technologies of the digital age, as well as the demands of a new and volatile market, Publishing Scotland becomes the voice and the network for publishing in Scotland.

Publishing Scotland remains a membership organisation, currently with more than 70 publishing company members and the same staff team, but the governance will change, the focus will evolve to respond to the 21st century needs of readers and publishing professionals of all kinds, and the membership will expand.

Publishing Scotland will take responsibility for the representation and development of the publishing sector in Scotland. The remit will be to work with companies, organisations and individuals in the industry, and to co-ordinate joint initiatives and partnerships.

We are working on our new website, which will launch in Summer 08.

There will be two membership categories. Publishing member, and network member. Publishing member will be for those who publish books or online. Network member is open to those who work in the industry e.g. agents, freelance editorial, proofreaders, or supply publishing services. We will still maintain the role of a trade association, industry standards, training, book fairs and consultation.
